Samurai Success founder David C. Olcott joins host Anthony Mistretta on The Ambiguous Truth for an in-depth conversation about identity, subconscious programming, ego and soul, value systems, meaningful change, and what it truly means to consciously create who you are.
What if lasting change isn’t simply about changing what you do?
What if it begins with changing the programming underneath it?
In Episode 17 of The Ambiguous Truth, David sits down with Anthony for a wide-ranging exploration of the beliefs, experiences and subconscious programming that influence the way we experience our lives.
“You’re not here to discover who you are. You’re actually here to create who you are.”
The Stories We Learn to Believe
David was adopted and grew up being told that he had been chosen.
It was an early example of something that would later become central to his understanding of human behaviour: the story we hold about ourselves influences what follows.
Throughout childhood, we absorb beliefs, values, expectations and definitions of the world around us. Much of that programming takes place before we are old enough to consciously question whether those beliefs are actually ours.
Years later, we can find ourselves attempting to create completely different circumstances while operating from much of the same underlying programming.
David and Anthony explore why this can make meaningful change so difficult to sustain. A new strategy, goal or behaviour may create a temporary shift, but if the identity and beliefs beneath it remain unchanged, familiar patterns can quickly return.
When Success on the Outside Isn’t Success on the Inside
David also shares his own experience of reaching a point in life that appeared successful from the outside while feeling deeply unfulfilled on the inside.
It presented an important contrast.
If the traditional markers of success had been achieved, why hadn’t they created the experience he expected them to?
That question became part of a much bigger journey into identity, spirituality, personal development, coaching and the work that would ultimately become Samurai Success.
Rather than asking only:
“What do I want?”
David’s work increasingly began with another question:
“Who do I say I am?”
Because the identity we repeatedly choose to embody influences the beliefs we reinforce, the decisions we make, the standards we hold and ultimately the experiences we create.

Self-Discovery or Self-Creation?
One of the most significant themes in the episode is the distinction between discovering who you are and creating who you are.
We are often encouraged to “find ourselves”.
But what happens if the identity we are attempting to find has largely been assembled from other people’s beliefs, experiences, expectations and definitions?
David proposes another possibility.
Rather than endlessly searching for an identity that already exists somewhere waiting to be uncovered, we can consciously participate in its creation.
We can examine the programming we have inherited. We can question the beliefs we have accepted. We can identify the values we choose to live by.
And through repeated conscious action, we can become increasingly aligned with the person we say we are.
This principle sits at the heart of much of the work within Samurai Success and the Swords of Illumination process.
Transformation becomes more than changing an outcome.
It becomes a process of consciously creating the person producing that outcome.
About The Ambiguous Truth
Hosted by Anthony Mistretta, The Ambiguous Truth explores the new era of work and the people creating lives and careers outside traditional expectations.
Through conversations with entrepreneurs, creators, artists and others building their own vision, the podcast explores how values, opportunities and personal choices come together in a world where the old rules increasingly no longer apply.
That makes David’s conversation with Anthony particularly fitting.
What happens when we stop allowing inherited expectations to determine the life we create?
